Materials
- Aluminum Can: Any standard soda or beer can.
- Scissors: To cut the aluminum can.
- File or Sandpaper (Optional): To smooth any sharp edges on the shim.
Preparing the Shim
- Cut the Aluminum Can: Using scissors, carefully cut the top and bottom off of the aluminum can. Cut along the side to create a flat sheet of aluminum.
- Create the Shim: Cut a โMโ or โWโ shaped piece from the flat aluminum. This should be approximately the width of the padlock shackle and long enough to wrap around it.
Using the Shim
- Wrap the Shim Around the Shackle: Take the cut piece of aluminum and wrap it around the shackle of the padlock, with the โMโ or โWโ point upwards towards the body of the lock.
- Insert the Shim: Push the aluminum shim downwards into the padlock body. If done correctly, this will depress the locking mechanism, allowing the shackle to be released.
- Open the Padlock: With the shim depressing the locking mechanism, the padlock should open as if it were unlocked.
Notes:
- This technique only works on certain types of padlocks that have a simple locking mechanism susceptible to this method.
- The use of these tools should only be done with the proper authorization and always in an ethical and legal manner.
- Always take care when cutting and handling aluminum cans, as the edges can be sharp and may cause injury if not handled carefully.
