    Materials

    • Aluminum Can: Any standard soda or beer can.
    • Scissors: To cut the aluminum can.
    • File or Sandpaper (Optional): To smooth any sharp edges on the shim.

    Preparing the Shim

    1. Cut the Aluminum Can: Using scissors, carefully cut the top and bottom off of the aluminum can. Cut along the side to create a flat sheet of aluminum.
    2. Create the Shim: Cut a โ€œMโ€ or โ€œWโ€ shaped piece from the flat aluminum. This should be approximately the width of the padlock shackle and long enough to wrap around it.

    Using the Shim

    1. Wrap the Shim Around the Shackle: Take the cut piece of aluminum and wrap it around the shackle of the padlock, with the โ€œMโ€ or โ€œWโ€ point upwards towards the body of the lock.
    2. Insert the Shim: Push the aluminum shim downwards into the padlock body. If done correctly, this will depress the locking mechanism, allowing the shackle to be released.
    3. Open the Padlock: With the shim depressing the locking mechanism, the padlock should open as if it were unlocked.

    Notes:

    • This technique only works on certain types of padlocks that have a simple locking mechanism susceptible to this method.
    • The use of these tools should only be done with the proper authorization and always in an ethical and legal manner.
    • Always take care when cutting and handling aluminum cans, as the edges can be sharp and may cause injury if not handled carefully.
