Hinge Removal Bypass
Hinge removal bypass is a method used by security professionals to test the physical security of a door by exploiting the hinge side. This method is applicable when a door swings outward and the hinge pins can be accessed from outside.
Steps to Perform Hinge Removal Bypass:
- Inspect the Hinges: Understand the type and structure of the hinges.
- Remove Hinge Pins: Standard hinge pins can be removed by gently tapping them upwards using a narrow, flat-head screwdriver and a hammer.
- Remove the Door: Once all hinge pins are removed, the door can be pulled away from the frame, effectively bypassing the lock.
Considerations:
- Security or non-removable pin hinges are designed to prevent this type of bypass.
- In these cases, “jamming” may be employed where a shim is inserted between the knuckle of the hinge.
- If dealing with a hospital tipped hinge, cutting or drilling may be required.
Hinge Removal Tools
Tools can vary based on the type and design of the hinge.
- Flathead Screwdriver: Used to tap out the hinge pins.
- Hammer: Used in conjunction with a screwdriver to tap out hinge pins.
- Pin Punch Set: Professional toolset for removing pins or hinges, especially useful for hinges with security features.
- Shims: Used in the case of security or non-removable pin hinges to create a gap and disengage the hinge.
- Cutting or Drilling Tools: Used for hospital tipped hinges, as a last resort due to permanent damage caused to the hinge.
